 Re: Barefoot Magician
Petra--with the star's daughter, I'd agree that this could be support for "holy ground." However, we are referring to Coriakin, I believe, and Dufflepud Island is a long way from the Beginning of the End of the World.

 Re: Barefoot Magician
Maybe his shoes gave him blisters on his feet, so now he doesn't want to wear them anymore. I know that was random, but I have a blister on my foot from my shoe, so that made me think of it. I don't like wearing shoes. And I do sometimes slip my shoes off during church when we're singing, and my sister gets mad at me, but I do it anyway. But yeah, I don't think there is a logical explanation. It's kind of like asking, "Why does Edmund wear a hat in PC?" But wait, there is an explanation for that one. It's to hide his bald spot. I think it's so funny how in LWW there's a picture of Edmund right after he walks through the wardrobe, and he has a bald spot, and then there's one where he's at the gates of the WW's house, and he has a bald spot, and there might be others.

What's about Ramandu's daughter? Is she barefoot as well?

 Re: Barefoot Magician
Mewr--I just looked it up, and I can't tell. I see that she had bare arms and was bareheaded, but nothing explicit about her feet. Unless there's something in the other version--I've heard there are a few minor differences between the British and American publishings, because Lewis did some rewriting.

 Re: Barefoot Magician
I suppose she is barefoot. I just found this in the other thread: By the way, later she becomes a queen. If stars don't wear shoes at all, would it be ok for a queen to walk barefoot?

 Re: Barefoot Magician
I think Narnia is the sort of place where they wouldn't mind such things as star queens not wearing shoes. In fact, I don't think they would mind if a queen decided to go barefoot no matter her ethnicity.
Ramandu's daughter had bare arms? What would Aunt Letty say! I can't believe Caspian would marry such a hussy. Hmph.

 Re: Barefoot Magician
I don't know if it's relevent but I'm reading HHB as part of Swanny's Read Narnia in a Week challenge and I've noticed that the Hermit of the Southern March is also described as having bare feet.
And he appears to have the ability to see things others can't
Coincedence?

 Re: Barefoot Magician
I always thought his foresight was more a byproduct of his time in front of the magic pool, but as Bree and Hwin and Aravis can't see through the pool as clearly as he does, perhaps it is inherent in him. But as far as the possibility of his having star's blood... I'd have to think on that.

 Re: Barefoot Magician
I don't know why, but I do remember when he welcomes Aslan. He welcomes him "to the least of your houses."
Could be the holy ground or presence of Aslan (walking where he had walked?) Or maybe because it was a common habbit. I don't know.

 Re: Barefoot Magician
Aunt Letty wouldn't be happy about her bare feet, too. I think she would consider it indecent.

 Re: Barefoot Magician
Bare arms and barefoot - why one would be able to see her ankles. It think aunt Letty would have fainted on the spot. But back to the barefoot thing. I think that initially it was simply a plot device. The duffers made out that Coriakin was this really scary magician, all the worse since he was invisible and barefoot (inaudible), so no one would know whether he was watching you or not. For Coriakin, I guess he liked being able to hide from his subjects; they could be rather tiresome and so walking around barefoot enabled him to go about his business without interruption. About the Hermit that Stew mentioned. I think it may be relevant. I still can't find my copy of HHB, so I couldn't look him up, but I noticed a number of other passages throughout the books where Lewis describes people as being barefoot. It may be that it was a descriptive device that he enjoyed using, especially if it was associated with freedom from the rigid norms. When the kids first arrive in Narnia in PC, they kick off their shoes, and the younger ones would have left them off if they had the choice. Lucy is barefoot at the beginning of DT because she (sensibly) kicks off her shoes in the water. Lewis talks about how lovely the grass on Felimath felt beneath her feet. Puddleglum is also described as barefoot. I think there may have been some other references to barefootedness that I noticed, but I didn't write them down, so now I've forgotten.

 Re: Barefoot Magician
On the opposite side of things, I just reread the section of VDT on Deathwater Island. Edmund explicitly points out that it was a lucky thing he wasn't barefoot when he stood by the pool and its water lapped onto his boots, which immediately turned into gold. He was the one who realized the property of the pool (from what happened to his boots) and alerted everyone that the water was not to be touched.

 Re: Barefoot Magician
Do you think stars are the sort of people who can be turned to gold? Maybe sky-dancers like them are more resilient to body-damage magic than we humans are. Come to think of it, I wonder whether the gold would be able to make them greedy, either, since they live in sight of all of Aslan's splendid handiwork day in and day out. They seem sort of... beyond Deathwater.
